Diagnosis can often feel challenging within child-centered play therapy (CCPT). Play therapists may struggle to identify how to align the diagnostic process with child-centered theory and practice. This workshop is intended to enhance play therapists' knowledge and application of CCPT with various diagnoses that are commonly encountered in play therapy practice. Participants will be exposed to a theoretical rationale for diagnosing within CCPT; key features of common diagnoses and how they may present in the playroom; and therapeutic responses to deepen the play therapy process.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to name at least 3 behaviors that may indicate specific diagnoses in play therapy.

2. Participants will be able to identify the strengths and limitations of child-centered play therapy with each diagnosis.

3. Participants will be able to demonstrate how to target responses for diagnoses within child-centered play therapy.

Strengthening Relationships: Integrating Child-Parent Relationship Therapy Principles into Parent Consultation and Play Therapy Practice

Friday, May 15, 2026 | 1PM – 4PM Eastern Time | 10-1 PM Pacific Time | Virtual

Working with parents and caregivers through the play therapy process can be dynamic, challenging, and ultimately transformative for children and their families. Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) can anchor play therapists’ work and provide a framework for collaborating effectively with parents and caregivers from intake to termination. CPRT offers play therapists a roadmap for fostering stronger parent-child relationships and strengthening parenting skills and efficacy to promote systemic change and healing. Learn how to integrate CPRT into your play therapy practice intentionally through assessment, CPRT adaptations, and the application of CPRT principles and interventions in parent and caregiver consultations.

This webinar will not provide a comprehensive overview of Child-Parent Relationship Therapy. Prior training and familiarity with CPRT/filial therapy may be helpful for participants.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key social, historical, and cultural factors impacting parents and caregivers in the U.S.

  2. Identify principles and interventions from Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) to support parent/caregiver consultations in play therapy.

  3. Apply a decision-making model to assess when and how to integrate CPRT into the play therapy process to support children and families.
